Research and Data Collection Projects

What is the difference between research projects and data collection projects for the development of professional skills?

Research Projects

Research is defined by the Tri-Council Policy Statement as a systematic investigation to establish facts, principles or generalizable knowledge. A systematic investigation could involve data collected by means of traditional or emergent methodologies and techniques that are accepted as characteristic of the specific discipline. The collected data is intended to contribute or add to a body of knowledge, or obtain or confirm knowledge, which includes the expectation that the knowledge will be disseminated.

Data Collection for Development of Professional Skills

Data collection for the purposes of professional skill development involves the gathering of information that will lead to improved business decisions. The data gathering project is designed to teach students how to gather accurate or relevant information to improve decisions or processes within an organization. The data is not intended for publication or dissemination within the public domain, or will add to a body of knowledge.
