Bio

As a member of the Management Information Systems area, Mr. Murch brings over 40 years of experience in working with computer-supported information systems to his teaching and administrative roles in the school. Within educational institutions, oil and gas firms, civic government and management consulting, his background includes direct work experience with Information Systems planning, systems analysis, design and development, project leadership and managing professional staff. Since joining the University of Calgary full-time in 1985, Ron established and lead the Information Technology Support Team for the Haskayne School of Business and was also actively involved in the school's Management Leadership Programs. From 1991 – 1996, he was the director of the University of Calgary’s Executive Development Program and acted as the executive director for the Banff School of Advanced Management. He has instructed Information Technology courses in the undergraduate, MBA and Executive MBA programs as well as serving as acting director of the MBA in Enterprise Development and chair of the university’s Technology Task Force from September 1997 to July 1998. During 1999-2000, Ron was also the acting director of the Professional/Evening MBA Program. In 2000 – 2001, Ron was awarded Honourable Mention for the Teaching Excellence Award by the Students’ Union and the Dean’s Award for teaching Excellence in the Haskayne School of Business. In 2004, he received the Haskayne School of Business, MBA Society Award for Outstanding Teaching and Learning. From July 2002 to July 2005, Ron was the Chair(person) for the Management Information Systems area of the Haskayne School of Business. From July to December 1998, and again from April through June 2006, Ron was a visiting faculty member at the Henley Management College in the UK and focused on the use of experiential learning techniques in program delivery as well as researching the role of information technologies in the changing forms of work. He has also been a visiting faculty member with the School of Information Management at the Victoria University in Wellington New Zealand and at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He continues to bring his interests in the areas of experiential learning and organizational impacts of IS/IT to his teaching in the core courses in Management Information Systems for our BComm and MBA programs.
