Bio
Dr. Birgitte Grogaard joined the Haskayne School of Business as an Assistant Professor in July 2007. She holds a PhD (2006) from the Norwegian School of Management, an MBA in Finance from University of Colorado at Boulder and a BA in Political Science from Vanderbilt University. Birgitte has previously taught courses in strategy and international management at the Norwegian School of Management, where she was also responsible for the portfolio of strategy courses in the MSc program.
Birgitte teaches undergraduate courses in strategic management, international strategic management and an MBA course on the international business environment. Her main research interests are international strategies and subsidiary roles, currently focusing on the context of energy firms. She has previously studied the alignment of firms’ international strategies and subsidiary roles and subsequent performance consequences as well as environmental influences on subsidiary roles and industry effects on firm strategies. Through this research, Birgitte is also working on developing sound methods for identifying firm strategies.
Prior to her PhD studies, Birgitte held various commercial positions in Norway’s largest oil and gas company StatoilHydro. Her experience from working with headquarter-subsidiary relations in international exploration and production has particularly influenced her subsequent research focus. Birgitte also worked as a management consultant for Gemini Consulting, primarily targeting strategic challenges in multinationals.
Birgitte has published in the Journal of International Business Studies and presented her work at conferences such as the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, Strategic Management Society, and European Academy of International Business.
